Explaining Financial Designations

What They Mean and Why They Matter

Letters after an advisor's name shouldn't feel like a foreign language. When you're trying to choose someone to help guide your family's financial journey, a wall of acronyms can leave you more confused than confident — and that's the opposite of what a financial partnership should feel like.

At Stonebridge Financial Partners, we believe that finding your "True North" starts with trusting the people helping you get there. So we've broken down the some of the designations, and explain what they actually require, and why they should factor into your decision.

Why Designations Aren't Just Alphabet Soup

Not everyone who calls themselves a "financial advisor" has met the same standard. Some titles require years of coursework, rigorous exams, and a strict ethical code. Others require very little at all. The credential your advisor holds tells you a lot about how they were trained, how they're held accountable, and what they specialize in.

  • How they were trained — the depth of their technical knowledge
  • How they're held accountable — whether they're legally bound to act in your best interest
  • What they specialize in — investments, taxes, estate planning, or comprehensive planning

Designation Glossary

Understanding these distinctions isn't about memorizing acronyms. It's about making sure the person managing your financial journey has earned the right to be trusted with it.

CFP® — Certified Financial Planner

Widely considered the gold standard for comprehensive financial planning. CFP® professionals complete rigorous coursework, pass a comprehensive exam, log 6,000 hours of professional experience, and commit to a strict fiduciary code of ethics, meaning they're obligated to act in your best interest, not just recommend suitable products.

CFA® — Chartered Financial Analyst

Highly specialized in investment management, portfolio construction, and securities analysis. Earning a CFA® requires passing three demanding levels of examination along with years of relevant work experience, making it one of the most respected credentials in investment management.

ChFC® — Chartered Financial Consultant

Issued by The American College of Financial Services, the ChFC® is similar in spirit to the CFP® but requires an intensive nine-course program covering holistic planning, estate planning, and taxation.

CPA/PFS — Certified Public Accountant / Personal Financial Specialist

This designation is held by CPAs who've completed additional, rigorous training specifically in tax strategy and personal wealth management, a powerful combination for clients whose financial picture is closely tied to tax complexity.

CIMA® — Certified Investment Management Analyst

Built for high-net-worth clients and institutions, the CIMA® goes deep on portfolio construction, risk management, and asset allocation, ideal for more sophisticated investment needs.

AIF® — Accredited Investment Fiduciary

This designation certifies that an advisor has deep knowledge of fiduciary standards and legal obligations, with an emphasis on acting strictly in the client's best interest at every turn.

EA — Enrolled Agent

An Enrolled Agent is the highest credential awarded by the Internal Revenue Service. It authorizes tax professionals to represent taxpayers in all 50 states and handle audits, collections, and appeals. Unlike CPAs, whose licenses are state-specific, EAs hold federal licenses that grant unlimited practice rights nationwide, making them a valuable resource for clients whose tax needs cross state lines.

What This Means for You

Choosing a financial advisor is one of the most consequential decisions you'll make on your financial journey, and it shouldn't be based on a warm handshake alone. When you understand what these credentials represent, you gain the confidence to ask better questions and set a higher bar for who earns your trust.

That's exactly the standard we hold ourselves to. Our team pursues these designations not to decorate a business card, but because they reflect the depth of expertise and fiduciary commitment we believe you deserve. When you work with Stonebridge, you're working with a team that has done the work to earn the credentials, and the trust.
